Formerly known as the Hong Kong Polytechnic, the Institution assumed full university status in 1994. PolyU is strategically located Hong Kong, on a site of approximately 93,500 square meters adjacent to the Cross Harbor Tunnel. Over the years, nearly 240,000 young men and women have graduated from PolyU and its predecessors - the Hong Kong Polytechnic, the Hong Kong Technical College and the Government Trade School. The University has 29 academic departments/units grouped under six Faculties. As of 30 June 2005, the University has 981 teaching staff, 200 academic equivalent administrative staff and 1,349 general grade and ancillary staff.
